Allan Gichigi

Kenyan photographer Allan Gichigi has today been announced as the winner of the Kenya National Award which is a part of the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards. Gichigi, who is an independent filmmaker and photographer based in Nairobi, was chosen as the winner for his image titled “Capture Kenya”. The photograph was taken at Lake Victoria and captures a fisherman named Morris at the point of casting his net.

Allan Gachigi had this to say about his win “I am grateful to have been part of this prestigious competition. I am truly honored to have made it this far and to everyone who participated, let’s keep raising the bar!”

The winning image was selected by a local panel of judges, including Kenyan Wildlife and Documentary photographer Amunga Eshuchi and Kennedy Gathuru of Sony Kenya.

The judges also awarded runner up positions to Migwa Nthigah (2nd) and Victor Karanja (3rd)

The Kenya National Award was open to Kenyan photographers of all abilities and it sought to uncover and honour the single best image taken by a Kenyan photographer entered into any of the ten Open categories of the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards.
