Showmax Originals won multiple awards at the 2025 Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF). The festival, a renowned celebration of global cinema, took place from June 25-29 2025.
Sci-fi drama Subterranea won Best TV Drama Series in East Africa beating out strong contenders, including fellow Showmax hits Single Kiasi Season 3 and The Chocolate Empire. Directed by Likarion Wainaina and penned by Brian Munene, the show captivated audiences with its intense narrative following eight participants in a psychological experiment while trapped in an underground bunker.
“This award is a testament to the passion, grit, and creativity of the entire Subterranea team,” says producer Brian Munene. “From our incredible cast to our visionary crew, everyone gave their all to bring this bold, original story to life. We are deeply honoured to be recognised at ZIFF, and we hope this win will inspire even more daring, authentic African storytelling to take center stage.”
Adding to the celebration, Jimmy Gathu was recognised for his performance in crime drama The Chocolate Empire. Jimmy stars as JB Mauzo, a once-powerful tycoon fresh out of prison, as he rebuilds his life and mends his fractured family, all while secretly operating a high-end escort service from his exclusive cigar club.
Tanzanian Showmax Original Jacob’s Daughters added to the platform’s wins, with Kojack Chillo taking home Best Actor in a Drama Series, Tanzania.
“To have both a series and a lead actor recognized at a festival as prestigious as ZIFF is a monumental achievement,” said Nzola Miranda. Managing Director at MultiChoice Kenya. “This double win highlight the incredible depth of talent in the East African creative industry and reinforces our commitment to being the home of authentic, high-quality African stories.”
