Safaricom has finally made the M-PESA API available. Developers will now be able to use the API to create aplications that will connect to the M-PESA platform directly. The release of the API means that developers will now be able to integrate M-PESA in their platforms.
The API has been a long time coming and developers have asked for it for quite some time. However after the M-PESA servers were moved to Kenya from Germany Safaricom said that everything was now in place and it would be released soon.
Safaricom has 23 million customers with 20 million of them using the mobile money service. M-PESA transaction value are at Ksh. 389 billion monthly. This shows that there is huge space for apps that will either use M-PESA directly or integrate it as a payment option.
The M-PESA API has been made possible by the new M-PESA platform (M-PESA 2nd generation platform) that offers anyone wanting to plug into M-PESA integration capability. Developers who want more information can contact Safaricom via m-pesadeveloper@safaricom.co.ke. The M-PESA API developer is available HERE.
