Camay

“I’m so happy to see you at the rendezvous. How’s life today your hands are softer than Camay too.” These are lyrics from the song ‘Camay’ by Ghostface Killah featuring Cappadonna and Raekwon. This song has featured severally on my playlist and hence I have always been curious about Camay. I don’t have to be anymore. Proctor & Gamble (P&G) has finally launched its Camay brand in Kenya.

The Camay brand isn’t new having been launched by P&G back in 1926. ‘Camay’ was coined from the French word camee, which means cameo, the jewel. The brand was very popular in America well into the 1980s and a lot of the women

from that era have been religiously buying Camay soap for the last 50 or so years. These ladies have been so loyal to the Camay brand that there was panic in the USA when Camay beauty soap became scarce in the market.

Camay’s launch in Kenya becomes the first in Sub-Saharan Africa and will see Camay seek to get a piece of the 100 million shilling Kenyan beauty market. Camay has 3 distinctive fragrances that are inspired by French fragrances and contain a drop of real perfume. These are: Romantic, Pure Refresh and Captivation. The products are available at your nearest shop and pricing for the soap will be between Sh50 and Sh100 depending on the size, deodorant roll on will sell for Sh270, spray will be Sh290, while the body lotion will be Sh180 and Sh350 for 100ml and 250ml respectively.

I have used the products for almost a week now and I can honestly say that I like them. Camay has a light feminine fragrance that is pleasant and actually long lasting. My favourite fragrance is Pure Refresh. Now I can only hope that continuous use of Camay will lead to hands as soft as the ones Ghostface Killah talks about in his musical ode to Camay.
