I&M Foundation has announced an additional Ksh. 2 million contribution to the Ngong Sanctuary Forest. This latest funding marks a pivotal transition for Project Imarisha, moving from large-scale infrastructure development to the long-term support of the human guardians who protect the ecosystem.

The announcement, made on April 2, 2026, ensures that the sanctuary’s frontline defense is well-equipped. The funds are earmarked for the purchase of uniforms for 14 scouts and will cover a full year of salaries for the sanctuary’s rangers.

While the project has historically focused on physical barriers and trail development, this final handover milestone shifts the spotlight onto personnel. During the handover ceremony, Dipna Shah, Sustainability Lead at I&M Foundation, highlighted that the success of any conservation project relies on the dignity and security of its workforce.

“While infrastructure and fences are important, the true heartbeat of this forest is its people,” Shah remarked. “By providing uniforms and salary support, we are ensuring that these scouts can perform their duties with dignity and security, laying a strong foundation for the long-term stewardship of this sanctuary.”

Many of the scouts are recruited from the surrounding local communities.

Launched to champion environmental sustainability and community upliftment, Project Imarisha has transformed the Ngong Sanctuary into a viable green lung for Nairobi, often compared to the popular Karura Forest.

To date, the initiative has achieved several major milestones:

  • Security Infrastructure: Installation of 14.2km of fencing, including a 5km electrified perimeter to enhance visitor safety and prevent encroachment.
  • Eco-Tourism Development: The creation of 35km of nature trails, opening the space for recreation and environmental education.
  • Ranger Welfare: The construction of dedicated Rangers Housing and an ablution block to improve living standards on-site.

As the primary infrastructure phase of Project Imarisha concludes, the Ngong Sanctuary Forest is now positioned as a premier destination for conservation and nature-based recreation.
