They say you can never go wrong with a suit but most of us -men- rarely pay attention to our ties. There are a wide range of ties from really funny one – multicolored or with various images- to really simple plain ones. Whatever your choice of tie there are a few fashion mistakes that we should avoid when choosing a tie.

1. Poorly tied ties

This includes such mistakes as a tie tied to short or too long, a flimsy looking knot that does not fill the gap between the collar, or a knot that shows any part of the narrow end of the tie.

2. Clashing colors or patterns

Some advice I was given once by a friend was that one should wear a plain tie with a patterned shirt and vice versa. Most men choose ties that do not compliment their outfits. In doubt wear a dark navy, or charcoal suit, and a white dress shirt as any color tie will compliment.

3. Wrong tie for a particular dress code

There are various occasions that require a certain type of tie such as black tie events that require one to where a self tied bow tie.

4. Wrinkled or stained neckties

These are very noticeable as the necktie is one of the focal points of your look. It is advisable to untie your ties after wearing them and put them on a tie rack. Also try not to wear the same tie two days in a row.

5. Wrong tie width

Skinny ties may be in fashion but one should pay attention that to the width of your suit. If you follow the basic rule that the width of the tie has to match the width of your suit jacket’s lapels then you will have no problems with selecting a tie that suits your suit.
