Google has officially launched its Gemini Pro Plan (Google AI Pro) in Kenya.

As part of the launch, Google will provide eligible Kenyan university and college students (aged 18 and above) with 12 months of complimentary access to the Google Gemini Pro Plan, which includes Google’s most advanced AI tools.

In September, Google announced that it will provide advanced AI tools to college students (aged 18 or older) in countries including Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

The launch was welcomed by Hon. William Kabogo, Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, and Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, Principal Secretary for Higher Education & Research, Ministry of Higher Education, alongside other senior officials and academic leaders.

Dr David Watene, Director, University Education and Research (representing Dr. Inyangala), highlighted the impact on the education sector:

“Our education sector recognises the urgent need to address the skills gap and integrate AI literacy across all learning demographics. The provision of Gemini Pro, a leading AI model for learning, offers an unparalleled resource to our academic institutions… This investment in specialised AI skills is vital to nurturing the agile AI workforce necessary to meet emerging industry demands.”

The Gemini Pro Plan grants students access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, designed to function as a personal tutor and academic companion.

  • Personalized Tutoring: Acts as an AI tutor, helping students understand and learn at their own pace.

  • NotebookLM: Google’s AI-powered research and writing assistant to summarize, analyze, and organize information from uploaded documents, videos, and websites.
