East Africa Breweries Limited, EABL, is set to launch a new premium whiskey in a bid to boost its sales. The new Talisker Storm is a variant of Talisker 10 that EABL has been distributing in Kenya on behalf of Diageo, its largest shareholder for the past few years. It is a new no age statement whisky released at the beginning of 2013.
Distilled in Scotland, Talisker Storm has an alcohol content of 45.8 per cent, higher than most whiskeys in the market, packaged in a 700ml bottle that will be selling at a recommended retail price of Sh5,230. A litre of Talisker 10 retails at Sh5,140.
According to excerpts from a review by MasterofMalt.com, it enjoys great reviews with the website itself giving it the review below.
” Nose: Initial brine, but not as abrupt as the 10 Year Old, quite creamy by comparison. Banana. Banana angel delight? Window putty, hint of sticking plasters and barbecues, citrus. White pepper develops towards the bottom of the glass.
Palate: Thick and mouth-coating with wood smoke, brine, some tin and chilli heat too.
Finish: Red chilli peppers and oak dryness with a hint of embers.
Overall: A welcome addition to the Talisker range, and probably the smokiest whisky to be produced on the Isle of Skye.”
Currently their premium spirits include Johnnie Walker Red Label, Smirnoff Vodka and Baileys while its reserve products include Johnnie Walker Blue Label, and Don Julio tequila among others.
A double-digit growth contributed significantly to the EABL’s earnings, helping it post a five per cent increase in full-year net profit to Sh6.85 billion from Sh6.52 billion the previous year.
EABL is also yet to disclose when it will launch Bulleit Bourbon, a premium drink which is distilled in Kentucky, US from a mixture of corn, rye and malted barley. It is undertaking a marketing campaign dubbed the “Love Whisky Festival” seeking to grow its market share.
