A night out is not complete without shots of something. It could be vodka, whiskey, gin, brandy or the most popular of them all tequila. If spirits were to be embodied as characters in an episode of mean girls, then tequila would be the hot girl in school that every guy wants to be seen with.

Now imagine having tequila in a beer. Sexy, right?

You don’t have to imagine anymore. In comes Desperados.

desperados

I had the pleasure of finally sampling the drink last night as i waited to listen to Andrew Wambua and Kaz. The beer has been around in Europe since 1995 but launched in Kenya this year. It is now available in 66 countries with France, Germany and the UK being the top markets with 11 African countries also making the list. It competes in the Premium Lager market with the likes of Tusker Malt and Summit Malt.

The Price

For 325 bob (at K1) I dont know if it is a beer i will be ordering week in week out. Maybe it goes with their target markets (which I might not be in) or I bought my first one at the wrong place. Either way, price is an important issue when it comes to Kenya’s party goers so this might be a bit discouraging for majority of us.

Appearance & Smell

The bottle looks cool (for lack of a better term). The beer itself is clear yellow with a small, foamy white head that quickly fades to a faint wisp and ring. There’s a bit of a malt smell, but not as much as you would get in beers like Tusker, with the signature tequila aroma.

Taste

At first, my taste buds were a bit confused looking for something to register its uniqueness. For someone who drinks different kinds of beers, it kinda tasted a bit flat but the tequila flavor did leave a distinct taste in my mouth.

The alcohol is at 5.9% which is higher than the normal beer sold locally.

Conclusion

Would i quit my favorite beer for this? Not really. But I feel beer should be a personal preference so maybe there are people around who enjoy it. The price discouraged me from drinking more of it (pockets aint that deep) so I guess i am not in the target market. It is still new in the market so let us wait and see if it will stick or not.
