The 2014 MTV Africa Music Awards night was held in Durban, South Africa over the weekend and only one Kenyan; Lupita Nyong’o bagged an award. Amani and Sauti Sol were the other nominees from Kenya. It was a star studded night with comedian Marlon Wayans hosting the event which was broadcast live around the world on MTV, MTV Base, BET International from the ICC.

Sauti Sol might not have won, but they got to share the stage with great stars as they performed to the audience at Durban’s International Conference Centre. Other electrifying performances were by Fally Ipupa, Don Jazzy, DJ Kent, , D’Banj, Burna Boy, Ice Prince and Sarkodie among others.

It was a huge night for Nigeria as Davido walked away with the ‘Best Male Artist’ award and ‘Male Artist of the Year’ award and Tiwa Savage was crowned ‘Best Female Artist’.

Other big winners of the Night were Mafikizolo, Uhuru and Clarence Peters. Quadruple nominees Mafikizolo triumphed in the ‘Best Group’ (beating Kenya’s Sauti Sol) and ‘Song of The Year’ categories.

South Africa’s Uhuru was recognised for ‘Best Collaboration’ for his part in “Y-tjukutja” by Uhuru Ft. Oskido, DJ Bucks, Professor and Yuri Da Cunha, and in ‘Song of the Year’. Nigerian video director Clarence Peters won two awards – ‘Transform Today by Absolut’, and ‘Best Video’.

Kenyan actress Luita Nyong’o took home the award for ‘Personality of the Year’ in this year’s newly introduced Lifestyle Award categories. The inaugural ‘MTV Base Leadership’ award was won by Tanzanian entrepreneur Ashish J. Thakkar.

There was also a moving acoustic guitar tribute to the late, Nelson Mandela by Afro-Soul star Simphiwe Dana, while Ladysmith Black Mambazo electrified the crowd with with their unexpected mash up “Acappello” and “Y-tjukutja”.
