TheCityRebooted

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design – three areas that are collectively shaping our future. TED is an annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. TEDTalks have reached over a billion views through ted.com, enlightening audiences worldwide with their powerful ideas. TEDxNairobi operates under a license from TED and is a self-organized event that creates a platform for international and local speakers to bring the TED experience to Nairobi.

The theme for TEDxNairobi 2013 is ‘The City Rebooted”. It encourages the audience reflect on how to build resilient cities, to re-imagine how our cities can become stronger in ways which create bridges across the rural-urban divide, reduce conflict over shared resources and support vulnerable communities across the world.

The City Rebooted is an opportunity for some of the sharpest leaders and visionaries from Kenya and around the world to tell us how to make that happen. By 2030 most of us will be living in cities, alongside 5 billion other people, mostly in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The way we live in these “mega-cities” will put a strain on the world’s resources, promote conflict in our communities and threaten the well-being of our planet. However our cities also generate jobs and income. With good governance, they can deliver education, health care and opportunities for social mobilization and the empowerment of women. The challenge for us in the next few decades; is learning how to exploit the possibilities that urbanization offers, without damaging the lives of millions in rural communities.

As we acknowledge that the time for change has come, we also need to know when and how to upgrade or redesign systems that support an evolving city. This is a global challenge that needs to be addressed. TEDx 2013 is the event to help achieve this.

TEDxNairobi 2013 will be held on Wednesday October 30th, 2013 at the World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF) in Gigiri, Narobi, Kenya from 2-7pm. Speakers will include Peter Lee – Executive Director, Global Forest Watch Canada and Martha Corzo – Champion of the Earth amongst others
