Going through university, especially public university, in Kenya is an awesome if not lesson filled experience. It seems embedded in our society’s culture, more so with our parents, to have a high need to seek fulfillment by attaining a Bachelor’s degree. University culture varies depending on where your fortune lies in regards to JABs (Joint Admissions Board) allocation of courses and varsity invitations. All the same, this is the period one is prepared for the “outside†world.
Previously it has been that one spends two years “bumming†or doing accounting/computer courses before going to university but the program has been changed and nowadays people head straight to campus from high school. Thus it is imperative that one is taught or advised in the following skill sets before heading to campus life.
1. Cooking, especially with an electric cooker or gas.
It is the rule in most university hostels that students should not cook in their rooms. It is assumed that they will make the long queues in the student mess for the subsidies delicacies available but this stops being the case as one progresses through the years. So, dear parents and guardians, make sure your kids learn how to cook before they head to campus. At least know the basics, ugali, rice, kales etc.
2. The art of self exile-ment
Only those who haven’t been to through public university fail to understand the concept behind exile and especially self exile-ment. You don’t need your roommate reaching the second base before reading the signs. Or being sent a text to excuse yourself. This will be vital for the four years you spend in campus.
3. Budget planning
Most high schoolers are used to their folks doing their shopping for them. Thus many fail to understand what goes behind making a proper budget and the art of financial planning. This is very important when you get your first HELB loan allocation. I’m telling you that money goes like Usain bolt in the Olympics.
4. Entrepreneurship
This works in tandem with financial planning. You must know your gifts and talents and find ways to exploit this for financial gain. There will always come a point when you need some extra quid and can’t go asking your folks for more cash.
These are just a few of the few things to learn but hopefully will give you a head start.
