Kenya Orient Insurance has today launched an insurance cover for mobile phones. Previously, you could only insure your mobile phone as part of your household items in a domestic insurance cover. This stand-alone mobile phone insurance dubbed Orient Mobile is the first of its kind in Kenya. Annual premiums will start from Kshs. 999.
To sign up users will have to send an SMS with the word MOBILE to the number 70707. The users will then receive an SMS with a link to the Orient Mobile website which they should then click to continue with the sign-up process.
It’s important to note that the initial SMS will have to be sent from the device that the user wants to insure and that he standard SMS and data rates as charged by the mobile network operator will be applied. For a phone to be eligible to be insured it has to be genuine and less than 2 years old from the date of purchase.
Users will be bale to register multiple devices using the same National ID or Passport number but the cover for each device will have to be purchased separately as each device will have a unique policy number.
At the launch Kenya Orient Managing Director, Muema Muindi had this to say about the new insurance cover “As the non-life segment moves beyond motor insurance, we are looking beyond the usual product avenues to give Kenyans compelling affordable and convenient solutions as well as deepen the penetration of insurance in the country.â€
