Safaricom has announced an price increase of its services including calls, SMS and Mobile Internet. The company also announced a price increase for its Fibre-To-The-Building (FTTB) and Fibre-To-The-Home (FTTH) services.

The price increase for its Safaricom Home Fibre product was necessitated by a new tax, a 15% Excise Duty tax on internet services that was introduced by the Finance Act 2018. It was signed into law by President Uhuru Kenyatta on September 21st, 2018.

This means that the prices of the popular home fibre service have increased by 15% effective 18th October 2018.

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) earlier this month sued the AG,  Speaker of the National Assembly and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) over the introduction of the 15% excise duty on internet services. They want the implementation of the new tax stopped and they want it declared unconstitutional.
