Jesus Christ Superstar; a fascinating play that has received loud applause and standing ovations throughout the world, will soon be showing in Kenya from the 7th and 17th April at the Kenyan National Theatre (KNT) for a whopping 12 showings. The production will be directed by Stuart Nash whose recent credits include Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and Annie, both at KNT. The play was written over 40 years ago by Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rice in 1970, and has wowed spectators ever since.

The musical focuses on the last week of Jesus’ life seen through the eyes of his betrayer, Judas. Its about his struggle to handle the decision to betray Jesus. Jesus’s human psychology, fear, and anger in understanding and accepting his role as both leader and martyr are also seen.

It’s a musical that’s based on the original rock opera production, which means the music has contemporary attitudes and sensibilities. There is also no spoken dialogue.

The play has been nominated for six Olivier Awards, including Best Musical Revival, Best Theatre Choreography, Best Lighting Design, Best Sound Design, Outstanding Achievement in Music, and Best Actor in a Musical for Tyrone Huntley.

Clearly, even while playing here, the production has a reputation to maintain. To ensure this, Dan Aceda; one of Kenya’s best loved live performers and singer-songwriters, most famous for his hits Sana Sana and Saida, is playing the role of Jesus. Mugambi Nthiga is acting the part of Judas and Mkamzee Mwatela will be taking up the role of Herod, despite being a woman.
