The much anticipated movie Queen of Katwe which stars Oscar winning Kenyan actor Lupita Nyong’o is set to premier on the 23rd of September 2016. Queen of Katwe is a story of a young girl selling corn on the streets whose life changes after she is introduced to the game of chess. With support from her family and community, ten year old Phiona Mutessi (played by Madina Nalwanga) quickly advances through the ranks in tournaments to become an international chess champion.
Lupita Nyong’o plays mother to Phiona works with David Oyelowo in this sports biographical drama film. Fans will be happy to see Lupita’s return to the screen in a big way after voicing in ‘Raksha’ in the movie Jungle Book. There has been talks that this movie could be lined up for an Oscar nomination when the awards season sets in 2017. This comes after news broke that Lupita in in negotiations to star in Marvel Studio’s Black Panther set to be released in 2018. We can only hope that she gets both an Oscar nomination for this movie and the role in Black Panther. For now watch the trailer below:
