In its inaugural Impact Report released today, the Britam Foundation documented a strategic footprint that has empowered over 92,000 lives and created 1,358 jobs across East Africa.
The foundation focuses on four pillars, Health, Education, Environment, and Entrepreneurship. It is addressing systemic gaps in water security, maternal health, and climate resilience across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda.
The Foundation’s water programme has emerged as its flagship intervention. By installing solar-powered boreholes and implementing hygiene education, the initiative has reached more than 90,000 learners and community members across 70 schools.
In arid regions such as Kitui and Kajiado, where water scarcity often dictates the rhythm of daily life, the impact is measurable:
- Yield: Rehabilitated boreholes produce an average of 9,291 litres per day.
- Time Savings: Students save an average of 5.9 hours per week previously spent fetching water.
- Education Boost: These interventions have contributed to a 15.4% increase in school enrolment as attendance stabilizes and health improves.
“Water is not philanthropy; it is development infrastructure,” noted Tom Gitogo, Britam Group Managing Director and CEO. He emphasized that reducing the operational burden on schools allows resources to be channeled back into learning, creating a “deliberate loop” where resilient communities lead to more stable markets.
In Nairobi’s Kibera settlement, the Lea Salama Maternal Health Programme is saving lives through a prevention-first model.
In partnership with Carolina for Kibera and Malaica Science, the programme supported 305 uninsured expectant mothers with impressive results:
- 97% skilled delivery rate, significantly higher than regional averages.
- Double the national median for antenatal visits (average of six per mother).
- 94% of households reported a reduction in pregnancy-related expenses.
The Foundation has also successfully linked environmental restoration with job creation. Through a partnership with Jumbo Charge Trust, the Foundation is reforesting the Mt Elgon water tower, one of Kenya’s five critical water sources.
| Metric | Achievement |
| Total Trees Planted | 95,235 (86,000 in Mt Elgon) |
| Land Restored | 444+ Acres |
| Jobs Created | 1,358 (Nursery ops, seed procurement, planting) |
| Enterprises Supported | 105 local nurseries |
The Britam Foundation operates on a structured funding model where Britam Holdings PLC commits 1% of its annual profit after tax to community investment.
“Our stability is intrinsically linked to the stability of the communities we serve,” said Dr. Peter Munga, Britam Foundation Board Chair. “We ensure that Britam’s legacy is measured not only by our returns, but by the resilience we build into the very fabric of society.”
