Victim shaming, disregard for her well-being, attacks on her character, failure to fully include her in the inquiry, and an inexcusable delay handling the sexual harassment case that she presented to the Ushahidi board. This was Angela Kabari’s bone of contention with Ushahidi. Instead, they apologised for getting caught.
In an unsigned statement posted on their website, Ushahidi apologised to Kabari for the sexual harassment that she underwent while she was an employee at the company. As I mentioned in a previous post, a lot of talking has been coming from the Ushahidi camp (Ushahidi issued four statements in a span of two weeks), but very little listening has been going on. This latest statement of apology is proof that they are not entirely genuine in their remorse, as they make no attempt at addressing what Kabari faulted them for, in their handling of the matter.
The irony in the Ushahidi sexual harassment scandal couldn’t be more stark. Their ethos revolves around justice, safety and human rights, yet, they participated in the very principles that rape culture thrives on. Where the victim is the one who stands trial and has to prove that the crime was indeed committed while the perpetrator walks free, exonerated of their misdeed. It’s this fear of being shamed for a violation on your humanity that keeps victims of sexual abuse silent when it happens. Kabari was accused of blowing the matter out of proportion by going public, grilled for over 2.5 hours in a bid to villianize her and sanitize Daudi Were. When that failed, she was accused of having a “potty mouth” for using the word ‘fuck’.
It’s not Ushahidi’s job to apologize for what Daudi Were did. That’s on him. What they need to do is listen to Angela Kabari and give her the apology that she deserves, not the one they deem fit. The board handled the matter in the worst way possible and they should take responsibility. Otherwise, they’re not fooling anyone.
Read the statement that Ushahidi issued announcing the dismissal of Daudi Were, the man responsible for sexually harassing Angel Kabari, here.
Here are some of the comments on the issue on Social Media.
"Dear Angela,
We fucked up.
It was inexcusable and indefensible.
Our exit is in progress.
We are sorry."

That the victim was the one left with the responsibility to force you into taking some kind of action. I'll leave it here for now.
— Koketso Moeti (@Kmoeti) July 22, 2017
Where is the sorry for mishandling the process AND trying to turn it on her? Try again https://t.co/mis9WhkWu2
— Clara (@WanjikuClara) July 22, 2017
Each & every statement/action Ushahidi's board has undertaken, including today's fake apology, is in response to being publicly called out. https://t.co/DaiUzEmLDD
— June Odongo (@jodongo) July 22, 2017
And the board? Y'all shamed a victim, let her resign and first blamed her for the entire affair. https://t.co/VayFS07fLw
— Gatwiri (@RookieKE) July 22, 2017
Hey @ushahidi Board,
What piss-poor apology is this?!https://t.co/cZ4Z4uYGGI— Gillyweed (@NyaKabs) July 22, 2017
Ushahidi is sorry, Angela is jobless and going through counselling. *Kanye shrug*. Legal process.
— Phares Kariuki (@kaboro) July 22, 2017
Translation: we're sorry we got exposed condoning sexual harassment, & put our funding at risk. Our funders require us to apologise to you. https://t.co/0MPHj4f1qO
— Mo (@MoSande) July 22, 2017
@ushahidi, this takes responsibility for actions of the perp (not your issue) rather than your inaction- something that was in your control
— Koketso Moeti (@Kmoeti) July 22, 2017
No form of compensation is mentioned for her troubles too. As useless as their untimely action on the issue https://t.co/K7PnjE2NkN
— Ma'Kunta (@julleberry) July 22, 2017
"We are so sorry that the actions of an individual have tarnished that mission and hurt you."
HOLLOW. EVADING RESPONSIBILITY. https://t.co/0MPHj4f1qO

— Miss Violette (@NdukuWambua) July 22, 2017
You are a platform to bear witness to injustice but let injustice continue. You have zero moral authority left.
— Clara (@WanjikuClara) July 21, 2017
You haven't apologized for maligning her & victim blaming. This feels shallow. How can the staff/public trust you to do better next time?
— Toroitich (@ToroChero) July 22, 2017
Let's be clear on one thing, the current Ushahidi board tolerates injustice and only acted because they were outed.
— Viv (@aufait_) July 22, 2017
You are apologizing for what Were did. That isn’t on you. What about for what you did and failed to do for her?
— The Baron (@BaronGreen_Back) July 22, 2017
This apology ought to come from the "accused" you lack the balls to name in the statement. Ushahidi needs a new board to survive.
— Dos Santos (@KattiePearl) July 22, 2017
? Your inaction, prompted other people to seek justice for the victim. They coming after your board for negligence. That ship sailed. ?
— Onyango Rachael (@OnyangoRachael) July 22, 2017
?it should never have gone this far! Unfortunately this is what we will always remember about @ushahidi
— Susan Amu (@sanyangu) July 22, 2017
Also, half the apology was about what the organisation stands for, which was not caring for Angela when she reported a rights violation.
— Dr. Njoki Ngumi (@njokingumi) July 23, 2017
It is all in the @ushahidi final report that was made public. I read the emails and the report completely aghast.
— Dr. Njoki Ngumi (@njokingumi) July 23, 2017
Also, how does @ushahidi then have half the apology about the ideals they broke into pieces by abandoning #AngelaKabari?
— Dr. Njoki Ngumi (@njokingumi) July 23, 2017
And an @ushahidi blogpost that says "sorry" cannot cover for a broken career and dreams, by a man enabled by them. It can't.
— Dr. Njoki Ngumi (@njokingumi) July 23, 2017
Please consider what it actually means in a human life, @ushahidi, when someone reports a violation in their midst.
— Dr. Njoki Ngumi (@njokingumi) July 23, 2017
This does not discount the essential, incredible work you do, @ushahidi, or imply anything about the individual characters of board members.
— Dr. Njoki Ngumi (@njokingumi) July 23, 2017
@ushahidi you need a new path prioritising safety of your employees as equal to our safety. We, Kenyans and global citizens.
— Dr. Njoki Ngumi (@njokingumi) July 23, 2017
And the only way you'll take that seriously, @ushahidi, is if a new team come in to steer the organisation in that way.
— Dr. Njoki Ngumi (@njokingumi) July 23, 2017
Struggling to think of ways the @ushahidi board could have effed up this sexual harassment situation more than they did.
— Trevor Kimenye (@kimenye) July 23, 2017
In addition to everything else, I am disappointed @ushahidi didn't employ the same "real-time pulse" that they expect of their products.
— Dr. Chao (@evangelinechao) July 23, 2017
Very difficult not to interpret this
“apology" as itself an attempt to conclude the matter + limit the blame to one person. #ushahidi pic.twitter.com/rpvIIQfSF8— Kenya Ni Kwetu (@KenyaNiKwetu) July 22, 2017
This is a weak ass apology.. board needs to resign. This apology takes absolutely no ownership for what they put her through
— MsG ?? (@MsMuthoni) July 22, 2017
You get the feeling the biggest lessons for Ushahidi are up ahead.
— Kenyan Facts ?? (@KResearcher) July 22, 2017
The Ushahidi blog post makes no mention of the victim or what they put her through. A reaction to negative press.
— Phares Kariuki (@kaboro) July 22, 2017
Let us not forget the victim who still works at @ushahidi but backed down because the board couldn't guarantee confidentiality
— Gatwiri (@RookieKE) July 23, 2017
"Dear Angela,
We fucked up.

–@ushahidi Board
— *Shift Happens* (@Buggz79) July 22, 2017
That's nice.
Except..
The board violated requests for confidentiality, silenced witnesses and gas lit the victim.
Sorry doesn't cut it. https://t.co/6PQ7XT0l91— *Shift Happens* (@Buggz79) July 22, 2017
Basically, @ushahidi Board, where is ur apology for failing her so spectacularly? If you're not going apologise for that, keep your apology
— Gillyweed (@NyaKabs) July 22, 2017
