A wig is a great, low maintenance protective style. They’re versatile without the commitment of braids and weaves. So if you miss the feeling through your hair, all you have to do is take the wig off.

Buying a wig for the first time can be quite overwhelming, you are like a deer in headlights walking through those shops along River Road, with women trying to sell you bleaching creams and all manner of cosmetic products when you all you want is a bloody wig! You don’t know which shop to go into or what to ask for and it’s all very exhausting.

Don’t give up sis, the good thing is, there’s not much to it.

The first thing you’ll need is to buy a wig cap. They’re sold at all beauty shops. A wig cap will give a smooth base before you put on your wig. It will also prevent friction between your hairline and the tracks on the wig which can lead to some serious hair loss.

Next is the type of wig. There’s wigs made of synthetic material, wigs that are a mixture of synthetic and human hair and those that are completely human hair. I’ve listed them in order of increasing price, maintenance, versatility and durability.

For fully synthetic wigs, you can clean them with anything. Just buy a cheap shampoo, wash it and apply a sheen. Most of the time the shop that sold you the wig will also stock the sheen. This cleaning routine will also apply to a semi-synthetic wig.

The difference between a synthetic wig and a semi-synthetic one is that the latter is more malleable meaning you can apply a limited amount of heat and achieve different hairstyles.

A human hair wig is the most versatile in terms of styling. It also requires the most maintenance. The way you’d treat the hair on your head is the same amount of care you apply on this type of wig. You need to wash it properly with a good quality shampoo, deep condition and treat it.

Then there’s lace front wigs which are those fancy wigs that blend seamlessly into your hairline. Best leave this to the professionals or wait until you’ve gathered enough experience on wig wearing from tutorials on YouTube or simply learnt from your mistakes on the dos n don’ts of wig wearing.

Those are the basics. As for the style of the wig that best suits you, think about your face structure and what works for you and apply the laws of trial and error to find that sweet spot.
