We have all seen those drivers who drive and overtake as if they did not go to a driving school. I have listed a few incidences of drivers behaving badly on the road to portray what not to do when overtaking. If you are a culprit kindly change your ways before you end up regretting it.
This is predominantly done by matatus though some drivers of private cars who should know better also do it. This is dangerous due to the fact that other drivers on the road are not expecting a numbskull to overtake on the left which might lead to a collision. It just takes a slight bump to push you off the road and onto an electricity pole such as the ones in the picture or even boulders. I always say that it is better to arrive late but alive rather than early but in a coffin/ambulance.
Sometimes you see drivers pulling dangerous manouvers on the road and wonder what the hell they are thinking. The driver in the picture is overtaking yet he can see that the distance between him and the oncoming traffic is minimal. Such a driver should be aware that anything can happen to his car which might cause stalling/deceleration or the acceleration might not be fast enough leading to a collision. Ensure to overestimate the distance between you and the oncoming traffic to cater for a clusterfuck. I mean who wants their guts spread out on the road.
If you actually went to a professional driving school and didn’t buy your driving license, you would know that a continuous yellow line denotes that you SHOULD NOT overtake along that stretch of the road. The yellow line is also known as the no-passing line. It is painted on roads where it is usually hazardous to cross the center line because there might be sharp bends or corners that restrict your view of approaching vehicles, dips in the road that could be hiding cars, close to a busy intersection, or it might be a hot spot of accidents so it’s unsafe to overtake by passing through the yellow line.
The only time you could overtake with the presence of a yellow no-passing line is when the lane is wide enough for two vehicles, you could see 100 meters of clear road ahead of you while you overtake, and you stay on your side of the yellow line. If not, you’ll have to wait until the yellow line ends to be able to overtake.
The fool in this picture is committing two grievous mistakes, one is obviously overtaking someone who is already overtaking and also overtaking at a section of the road where there is a continuous yellow line. This means that the driver cannot be able to see the oncoming traffic at all. If lets say there is a speeding lorry coming from the opposite direction, the driver would not have time/space to avoid it resulting in a collision.
Road accidents are on the most part avoidable if only people did what they are supposed to do that is obeying traffic signs/rules, not over speeding among others. The worst offenders on our roads are public service vehicles so if you happen to be riding in one and you notice the driver driving recklessly speak out. It might mean the difference between waking up in your own bed or a hospital bed/coffin. Don’t be that person who wishes that they had spoken out after they wake up to find themselves in a hospital bed.
