Shaving is a big part of male grooming. Gillette, a leading male grooming brand, recently did a study dubbed “Kiss and Tell” and came up with some interesting statistics. They found out that:
- 85% of women prefer kissing a man who is well shaved
- 1 in 3 women have avoided kissing a man because of facial hair
- 67% of women thought a beard would be scratchy
- and, 37% thought the man as lazy.
In Kenya, 70% of the men shave at the barber shop which means that only 30% shave from home. According to Gillette, this is mainly because most men do not know they can shave themselves, how to shave themselves or what is available for this. This is why they have embarked on an awareness campaign using various mediums and personalities, like Messi, to try and get more men to shave themselves.
Gillette offers a wide range of products in the markets to cater for all men. From the easy available disposable razor to the highly efficient fusion blades. This cost from 25 shillings to 1000 bob depending on your budget. The disposable blades have 2 razors while the fusion blades have 3-5 blades. This makes the fusion ones more efficient as just shaving once or twice is like shaving twice on the disposable blades and reduces the chances of hurting your skin through friction.
Shaving from home is not difficult or time consuming as some may think. A few things you should note when you decide to shave from home:
- Use clean warm water to open the pores and remove dirt.
- Listen to how your hair grown and shave against it. This means you can shave either upwards or backwards depending on your hair.
- Ideally it is good to use shaving creams and form but you can still use soap and water.
- The best thing is to shave as frequently as possible which could be every day or severally in a week.
Another misconception is that Gillette blades can only be used to shave beards which is not the case. You can use the blades to shave any hair on your body from beards to hair on your head, arm pits, chest, pubic hair etc.
After their relaunch in the market last year, Gillette say they are starting to see a shift in the market with more and more men shaving from home. They also have blades made for the female customers under the Venus brand which are slightly different from the male blades as women have different needs but they still offer the same quality.
