30 Kenyans have been awarded scholarships by the Tullow Group to pursue post-graduate degrees at leading universities in the United Kingdom and in Europe. The group was feted at a send off event hosted by Tullow Kenya.
The Kenyans will make up nearly a third of the more than 100 scholars from 8 African and South American countries who will benefit from the Tullow Group Scholarship Scheme (TGSS) this year.
TGSS aims to address skills gaps in countries where the company is operating by helping local people gain expertise in oil and gas as well as in other industries which are stimulated by the growth of the sector.
The students, who come from a diverse range of professions, will undertake a wide variety of courses which include Engineering and Technology; Environment and Geosciences; Oil and Gas Economics; Logistics and Supply Chain; as well as Law.
The TGSS program is also available in Ethiopia, Ghana, Mauritania, Ivory Coast, Uganda, Uruguay, and Suriname and is administered by the British Council on behalf of the Tullow Group. It has been available to Kenyans since 2012 and targets citizens who are resident and working in the participating countries with the aim of having the scholars return and contribute to the development of their home country.
So far 55, Kenyans have benefitted from TGSS. The 30 Tullow Scholars have been selected out of 7,000 applications. They will pursue postgraduate studies at some of the UK’s finest Universities and will be joining an estimated 450,000 foreign students who choose the UK as a study destination every year – including more than 2,000 Kenyans.
The 2014/2015 scholars will depart for their studies during the month of September.
