Animation du Monde is coming to Kenya at the Nairobi Comic Con (NAICCON) 2019 as the fourth leg of the pan-african animation competition. The event will be held on 24 – 25 August 2019.
NAICCON (Nairobi Comic Convention) has successfully held six events, with over 6000 enthusiastic artists, illustrators, comic book lovers, animation artists, YouTubers, Cosplayers, gamers and movie lovers attending through the years. Tickets to the event are available HERE.
Animation du Monde is a pitching competition for animators and is run in Africa by the African Animation Network (AAN). AAN will host 5 regional preliminary rounds. They will be in Johannesburg (at ICON CGC), Abidjan (DISCOP Abidjan), Lagos (at Lagos Comic Con), and Nairobi (Nairobi Comic Con). AAN has also partnered with the Accra Animation Film Festival (AAFFia) to add a 5th regional preliminary round.
Kenyans can enter the Animation du Monde pitching competition which will see 3 contestants going through to the Continental Finals at DISCOP Johannesburg in November. Entries are currently open, until 11 August 2019 and aimators can enter the competition HERE.
Past entrants from NAICCON have included Salim Busuru who presented his title at the 2018 Continental Finals at DISCOP Johannesburg. He summed up his experience; “The animation competition broadened my perspective on animation on the continent, it confirmed that I was on the right path in my pursuit of animation. Meeting the other participants and the mentorship from the judges as well as the organisers was invaluable. I believe it compensated a lot for my lack of formal training in animation and storytelling”.
Additionally, Kenya’s Naddya Adhiambo Oluoch-Olunya won Animation du Monde at the global finals this year at Annecy with her project UZI. Uzi is a 3 minute long 2d animated short about a perfectionist seamstress and her precocious daughter Kpokpo. The two of them are on a quest to make the world’s most beautiful dress, so they travel all over Kenya looking for finest materials for the garment.
