Eneza Education and Strauss Energy were winners at the Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship (AAE) 2017 held in Mauritius which are organized by the African Leadership Network (ALN). Eneza Education won the Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award and Strauss Energy won the Best Growing Business Award.

Eneza Education provides mobile based education tools for primary school students. The company was founded five years ago by Kago Kagichiri. One of their projects is the Shupavu 291 app which is an SMS based exam revision and learning solution that was developed in partnership with Safaricom.

Strauss Energy is an energy company founded by Tony Nyagah and Charity Wanjiku, that innovates by creating roofing tiles that also act as solar panels. The idea to integrate solar panels into roofing tiles came from the desire to provide Kenyan households with access to clean and renewable energy.

The awards are held annually and recognise top businesses from across the continent in the categories of:

  • Best Growing Business
  • Businesses that have a significant revenue base and presence on the continent
  • Youth entrepreneur of the year
  • Social entrepreneur of the year
