After conducting a successful awards ceremony in May last year, the Bloggers Association of Kenya (BAKE) yesterday announced the launch of the submission phase of this year’s competition. The annual competition is now on its 6th year and it seeks to celebrate the best of Kenyan blogging.

Last year’s contest saw a total of 4,899 blogs being submitted and over 500,000 votes recorded. This represents the most tremendous growth in the sector since the awards ceremony was started. Women bloggers did well last year with bloggers such as Jamila El-Jabry , Dr. Claire Kinuthia , Maryann Waweru , Rachael Muthoni , Diana Kaluhi  and Lucia Musau emerging winners. This year we hope to see more of them.

One of the issues that had arisen in the previous awards was the issue of perennial winners in some categories which effectively locked out new blood. This year after getting feedback from the blogging community, BAKE has introduced a rule that makes anyone who has won an award for more than three times ineligible to compete. They have also added a new category, that is Best Lifestyle Blog which brings the total number of categories to 20.

BAKE is at the moment accepting submissions in the various categories. Thereafter the judges will decide the best 5 nominees from the submitted blogs and then the public will have a chance to vote for them. Winners will be awarded at a gala event scheduled for May 13th 2017.

The timeline will be as follows;

1. Submission phase – January 9th 2017 to February 10th 2017
2. Judging phase – February 11th 2017 to February 28th 2017
3. Online voting – March 3rd 2017 to May 1st 2017
4. Winners’ Gala Event – May 13th 2017
