Safaricom recently announced its Ksh 25 million sponsorship for the 25th edition of the Lewa Safari Marathon. The event’s 25th anniversary edition will be held on Saturday 29th June, 2024. Registration for the Marathon is currently open.
For the past quarter decade, the Lewa Safari Marathon has become one of the world’s most breathtaking races, known for its captivating terrain and incredible wildlife experience. The marathon was one of the top ten races to take on in your life by Runner’s World, and is on countless bucket lists, drawing participants from over 40 countries.
For many participants, the Lewa Safari Marathon is not just a personal challenge. The event has supported conservation projects across Kenya for decades. By taking part, every participant plays a role in helping local communities and raising awareness of the threats facing Africa’s biodiversity.
For 25 years, funds generated from the event have contributed to conservation successes for animals like the black rhino, Grevy’s zebra, leatherback turtle, mountain bongo and elephant.
The annual event has hosted runners of all classes over the years, from elite professionals like marathon winner Eliud Kipchoge, to amateur runners and walkers alike.
Speaking while announcing this year’s sponsorship, Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa noted, “Since the very beginning, Safaricom has been an integral partner of the Lewa Safari Marathon, demonstrating our commitment to the well-being of our environment and ecosystem. This year, we are excited to extend our support for the event, committing Ksh. 25 million to its success.”
The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy has played host to the event for a quarter of a century, making the marathon one of the world’s most challenging and rewarding. The Conservancy is a UNESCO world heritage site, known for its diverse habitats of pristine forest, extensive grasslands, numerous springs and woodland which provide a stunning location for this event.
