Have you installed a solar water heater system at your premises yet? Well you should have by now. The Energy Regulation Commission (ERC) has issued a notice on the expiration of the compliance deadline for The Energy Regulations (Solar Water Heating) Regulations 2012 Legal notice No. 43.

The regulation required that all premises whose daily use of hot water is above 100 Litres a day to install and use solar water heaters. Failure to which could have serve a one year jail term or pay a stiff fine of Ksh. 1 Million.

The minimum threshold for daily consumption of hot water is:

SN TYPE OF BUILDING MINIMUM 100 LITRES DAILY DEMAND THRESHOLD (AT 60°C)
1. Domestic residential houses 3 bedrooms
2. Educational institutions such as colleges and boarding houses 20 students
3. Health institutions 2 beds
4. Hotels, hostels, lodges and similar boarding facilities 4 beds
5. Restaurants, cafeterias and similar eating places 20 meals
6. Laundries 20 Kgs of clothing

As a result of the expiration of the deadline, which was 25th May 2017, the commission is carrying out checks on existing buildings and construction sites to ensure compliance of the regulations.
