In what is clearly good news for those who travel outside Kenya, Safaricom has today announced that it has reduced the roaming charges for calls and data by upto 99% for over 200 networks across the world. This follows successful negotiations with its global network of partners.
Safaricom customers will now be able to enjoy reduced roaming rates at the rate of Kshs.14 per MB in over 52 countries as well as make calls at reduced rates. In China which is a favorite destination for many business people one will now be charges Kshs.50 to call back home and enjoy a low of Kshs.10 per minute to call within China, down from the former rate of Kshs.360 and Kshs. 130 respectively. Data pricing will fall from Kshs. 14 per MB while romaing on China Mobile and China Unicom down from the previous rate of Kshs. 1,900. I am sure this will be music for those Kenyans who work and live in China who couldn’t call back home due to the prohibitive rates.
The new rates will be applicable to both Prepay and Postpaid subscribers with customers able to select their network of choice in the destinations that they travel to. One can be able to check applicable rates for the country that they wish to travel to and the preferred roaming network by going to roaming.safaricom.co.ke.
The countries in which one can roam with Kshs. 14 include; Tanzania, China, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, South Africa, Ghana, Netherlands, DRC, Germany, Italy, Nigeria, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Botswana, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Jamaica, Japan, Latvia, Lesotho, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Macedonia, Malta, Mozambique, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Swaziland and Thailand.
