Buni Tv is better known for the comedy series ‘XYZ ’ has been acquired by TRACE TV. This is apparently in preparation for the launch of their own Video on Demand (VOD) platform TRACE Play which is scheduled for later this year.
Buni.tv was launched back in 2012 as one of the first VOD platforms to focus on the African market. Today it is recognized as one of the 3 largest VOD services on the continent alongside Iroko TV and Showmax.
The acquisition as per the Buni Tv CEO Marie Lora – Mungai was to enable them achieve critical mass which is important for the success of any VOD. She also stated that TRACE and Buni.tv share the same strategic vision in that they believe that VOD is the future of television. They also share the same analysis that the success of any VOD service in Africa will depend on whether it can source and offer high quality original African content. This shared vision makes TRACE an ideal partner for Buni.tv.
Initially, Buni Tv users will not notice anything different with the service but after the launch of Trace Play, it will be moved and hosted by that service. Eventually the two services will be merged and current subscribers of Buni.tv will be able to access the full TRACE Play catalogue which includes thousands of hours of African and international content.
There is some good news for registered users who are not current subscribers in that they will be promotional offers just for them, this will enable one to get to try out TRACE Play at preferential rates.
Kudos to the team behind Buni.tv for a job well done.
