Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) yesterday announced announced the winners of the 12th Annual Energy Management Awards (EMA). Cigarette manufacturer British American Tobacco (BAT) emerged as the overall winner.
The annual Energy Management Awards are organized by KAM and target all energy consumers. They are aimed at encouraging a culture of energy efficiency and conservation. They also recognize companies that have taken steps in energy efficiency. KAM holds the Energy Management Awards during the Kenya Sustainable Energy Day which is set aside to celebrate the great milestones that Kenya has taken to develop Clean Sustainable Energy. This year’s Sustainable Energy Day was aimed at creating awareness on climate change, conserving energy and implementing energy efficiency initiatives through supporting the use of renewable energy.
At the awards dinner, KAM CEO Phyllis Wakiaga revealed that in the 12 years that the awards have been held Ksh. 12 Billion in energy costs have been saved. She also added that “In an effort to encourage accelerated investment in renewable energy development, the government has formulated the feed-in-tariffs policy for Independent power production in Clean Energy. KAM recognizes our government for showing great leadership in spearheading the medium-term development of 5,000MW of new Installed Power Capacity. Most of this installed capacity will comprise of renewable energy to provide the base-load power.”
In attendance were Deputy President William Ruto, KPLC MD ben Chumo, Energy and Petroleum PS Joseph Njoroge, PS International Trade Chris Kiptoo and PS East African Affairs Betty Maina.
