After having heard and read so much about the CBA Concours d’ Elegance, I was finally able to attend the annual event last weekend. I have to say I was not in the least disappointed as being a car enthusiast it was interesting to be able to walk through history and see the classic and vintage cars on display. Other than the classics there were some new cars, Pick-ups and SUVs on display at the Auto Expo. A kid’s play area ensured that the little ones also had their fun.

One of the interesting finds at the event was the car that Joginder Singh “Flying Sikh” raced with and won the East African Safari Rally in 1976 a Mitsubishi Colt Lancer 1600 GSR. For those not in the know Joginder Singh was a successful endurance rally driver in the 1960’s and 70’s back when it was called the East African Safari Rally and used to traverse Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Given the distance that was to be covered you had to be very good in order to win the rally three times that is in 1965, 1974 and 1976. He made history by being the first man to win the Safari rally three times and also for being the first Sikh to win an international rally. The car surprisingly was in mint condition after so many years and even had his autograph.

Other than the classics, one vehicle that really stood out for me was the Isuzu Momo pick-up from General Motors. The car was a definite crowd puller given the number of people who stopped to marvel at it. It was easy to tell why the people at General Motors named it “Momo” . Given the fact that the el-nino rains are around the corner and knowing how bad our roads can get, the truck can be very handy. The distinguishing features of the pick-up truck according to GM are; severe off road capacity, navigation system, high ground clearance, reverse camera (just in case you don’t see the ka-vitz behind you), recovery winch and a very bold look. The high ground clearance was a definite win for me.
