Bamba TV launched on 22nd December 2014 and is managed by Lancia Digital Broadcast Limited, a Radio Africa Group subsidiary. Bamba Tv is headed by Danny Mucira. Bamba TV is a conditional access set-top box that airs both exclusive content and available free to air channels. Their set-box is plug and play and one only needs to connect it to an aerial. Bamba TV will have 50+ channels but at the moment 17 channels are active.

According to Caroline Mutoko, the Chief Marketing Officer Radio Africa Group, Bamba TV will operate on a freemium model. The content will be offered for free and they will derive their revenues from advertising monies. She added “It’s time to open up our homes to a lot more variety, a bigger offering and most certainly better quality entertainment. Television is NOT three channels that dictate what is good for you. Television is about choice, when you want and how you want it and you should have to pay for that. In the digital world – the audience rules, content is king and distribution is King Kong. BAMBA plans to be King Kong. There is no reason under heaven why Kenyans must wake up one day and START paying for TV. Why? They have enough on their plates and more than that, TV networks make money off advertising. Why would we be charging people to watch. Why? If you build it and build it well, they will come. The audiences will choose what they love and the advertisers will vote with their advertising dollars.”

Cost of Bamba TV set-top box

The Bamba TV set-top box retails at Ksh. 3,299 and thereafter users will not pay subscription fees.
