If you drive around town at 2.00 a.m after a night of partying and mention food, among the top three in the list of places that will be given a drunken slur will be Sonford Fish and Chips. This is a typical fast food joint in Moi Avenue but for some reason it has managed to earn itself a reputation and following among Nairobians; from teenagers to thirty-something year olds.
Sonford is always full. For University and College students, from the national University of Nairobi to RIDS-Royal Institute of Directory Studies to the fresh-from-high school Alliance and Goethe young’ins, the most common denominator will be Sonford. And why not?
Service
Having been used to the heavy traffic, their service is fast from paying to getting your fries or chicken. The quantity is acceptable and the place is constantly being washed so the place is never dirty.
Ambiance
Many a drunk man has been found singing and dancing while inside Sonford. Why? My pal has a theory. She believes this is because the ultrabrilliant fluorescent bulbs inside (plus the mirror effect) coupled with the really loud music similar to that one in the club, most revellers are not fully aware where they are. If they are aware, then there are memory lapses every now and then.
The Sonford generation is the one that follows trends, from geeky specs to supras. They are the ones with enough money to keep up. They are not really poor neither filthy rich. Middle-class. On the upside though, a pack of fries from there will guarantee a full stomach.
