Safe sex has been an issue in the public domain for quite some time. The number of adverts on TV and radio about using contraceptives are increasing. HIV and STDs cases are constantly on the rise making the need for safe sex a priority among couples. When it comes to using condoms as contraceptives, there seems to be a myth that only the man should buy the condoms. This is something shared by most of the people i know. to them, a woman shouldn’t have condoms with her.
In a sexual relationship, one or both parties usually takes the initiative to make sure it happens and that you’re safe while at it. This means having a condom at hand when the time comes. Most times, the guy provides the condom. but what happens when its a spur of the moment thing and he has run out of condoms? In such a scenario, wouldn’t it be okay for the guy to be happy if the girl provides the condoms?
I have a friend who found condoms in his girlfriend’s purse. I was more concerned about him going through her purse, but to him the issue was why she had condoms and who she was using them with. According to him, he provides the condoms, always has, always will. Her having them meant she was using them with someone else. I’m not sure how their conversation on it went. But if I were the girl, I wouldn’t feel bad about having them. It’s not his job to provide condoms, anyone in the relationship can do so if the need arises.
I’ve heard people say that a girl who carries around condoms is a slut. That you only have them if you plan on sleeping around. Granted that having condoms means you’re sexually active, it doesn’t mean you should only have them when you plan on having sex. It’s a precaution you take, for future use. You never know when the condom your boyfriend has will burst, or when they’ll run out in the middle of the night. A girl having condoms does not mean she sleeps around with several men. It simply means she knows she needs to be safe when having sex and she is taking the steps to make it happen.
There are a variety of condoms out there. And everyone reacts differently to each. Maybe you’re allergic to the lubricant or the latex irritates you or maybe you just prefer a certain brand. Some girls find it hard explaining this to a new partner and prefer stocking their own condoms to make sure they use what suits them. Of curse this is never a good idea because he guy might have a specific brand he prefers as well. If talking about what condoms you like with that new guy is hard, why not buy the condoms yourself? It will save on the time it takes to broach the whole subject and explain it all to him.
For some time now it’s been said that men should initiate sex. but times are changing. Women no longer let the man take the lead in a relationship. If a girl can make the first move and flirt with you, there should be no problem with her buying condoms. It’s a bold move and it shows she knows about safe sex and doesn’t want to get pregnant or contract STDs. It might be weird for some people to see a woman buying condoms, but that doesn’t reflect on her moral character. It doesn’t mean she sleeps around a lot.
I find it liberating to see women buying condoms. Buying condoms is not a gender issue. Anyone having sex should feel comfortable enough to have condoms with them. your safety is more important than people’s opinions on how it looks when you buy them. With HIV/AIDS on the rise, there really should be no issue with a woman having condoms.
