Dr Gilchrist Lokoel is a Medical Doctor and an Epidemiologist by specialization born in Lokitaung- Turkana County 38 years ago.
He attended Lokitaung Primary School, then the prestigious Mang'u High School where he passed well and got admitted for a medical degree from Moi University where he graduated in 2006. It's the love of his people that saw him finish Internship from Coast Provincial General Hospital and requested a transfer to his home town of Turkana where he worked as the only medical officer for 6 months covering the entire Turkana. Thereafter, in 2009, he became DMOH for Turkana Central and Loima where he battled a huge polio and cholera outbreak in the district. Two years later he did a post graduate course in Field Epidemiology between 2011 -2013 and in 2014, he came back and worked as County Epidemiologist where he investigated Measles outbreaks cholera outbreaks and suspected vural hemorrhagic fevers and strengthned cross border collaborations.
Through hardwork and sheer determination, he was appointed Medical Superintendent of Lodwar County and Referral Hospital in 2015 where he oversaw upgrade of the hospital to a referral facility enjoying Level 5 status through construction if ICU, oxygen plant, increased human resource, radiology and lab upgrades and linking it to various teaching institutions.
Last year 2018 May, he was promoted to Director of Medical Services where is in charge of strengthening Sub County hospitals, revamping primary health care at various levels, and ensuring that drugs and health commodities are found in all health facilities and Turkana residents enjoy the highest attainable standards of health care.
Dr Lokoel is married and has two son and he resides in Lodwar town.
