The National Land Commission (NLC) has officially entered a new chapter in its governance following the swearing-in of seven new Commissioners.
The appointments mark the beginning of the third Commission since the NLC was established in 2013, a move expected to revitalize the management and administration of land resources across the country.
The new team is led by Dr. Abdillahi Saggaf Alawy, who takes over as Chairperson. He is joined by a diverse group of professionals tasked with navigating the complexities of Kenya’s land sector:
- Susan Oyatsi (Commissioner)
- Daniel Murithi Muriungi (Commissioner)
- Kigen Vincent Cheruiyot (Commissioner)
- Dr. CS. Julie Ouma Oseko (Commissioner)
- Mohamed Abdi Mohamed (Commissioner)
- Mary Yiane Seneta (Commissioner)
These seven appointees join existing commissioners Esther Mathenge Murugi and Tiyah Galgalo, completing the leadership bench of the constitutional body.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Chairman Dr. Alawy acknowledged the high stakes involved in land administration, citing land as one of Kenya’s most sensitive and vital resources.
“As we take the oath of office, we are fully aware of the expectations that Kenyans have of the National Land Commission,” Dr. Alawy remarked. “Land touches on livelihoods, development, investment, environmental sustainability, and social justice. The responsibility entrusted to us is therefore both profound and sacred.”
The Chairman reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to the rule of law, promising to execute their mandate with a focus on integrity, transparency, and fairness.
The arrival of the new commissioners is viewed as a milestone for the NLC as it seeks to strengthen its governance systems and address its expanded mandate. Key priorities for the third Commission include the review of public land grants, investigating historical land injustices, and advising the government on land policy.
NLC CEO Kabale Tache Arero, representing the Secretariat, expressed confidence in the new team’s ability to deliver.
“We have no doubt that with your leadership and expertise, the National Land Commission will be significantly strengthened,” she said. Ms. Arero emphasized that the commissioners will be supported by a competent and professional staff ready to implement the Commission’s strategic goals.
