Safaricom today hosted the Safaricom Cybersecurity Summit 2025 at the Mövenpick Hotel. The forum brought together a critical mass of business leaders, government officials, regulators, and technology experts.

The forum, themed Powering Progress. Securing Growth, focused on strengthening Kenya’s collective defenses against the nation’s escalating wave of cyber threats.

In the first quarter of 2025 alone, the National Kenya Computer Incident Response Team Coordination Centre (National KE-CIRT/CC) detected over 2.5 billion cyber threat events. This increase from the previous quarter highlights the persistent danger posed by attacks such as phishing scams, sophisticated ransomware, and large-scale system disruptions.

Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa underscored the necessity of a unified approach in his opening address. “Cybercrime is a challenge that no single institution can solve alone. As more Kenyans embrace digital tools, the responsibility to keep them safe becomes greater. This summit provides a platform for government, private sector, and civil society to collaborate and ensure that Kenya’s digital growth is anchored on trust and resilience,” said Ndegwa.

Throughout the day, participants engaged in a comprehensive agenda designed to translate strategy into action. The event featured high-level keynote sessions, in-depth expert panel discussions, practical hands-on training, and interactive showcases of the latest security tools.

The sessions were geared toward providing leaders, IT professionals, and entrepreneurs with practical insights into securing their systems while also stressing the importance of inclusion and accessibility in digital security planning.

The 2025 Summit is a continuation of last year’s successful event and also coincides with Safaricom’s 25th anniversary. From just 17,000 subscribers in 2000, Safaricom now serves over 60 million customers across Kenya and Ethiopia, driving inclusive access to communication, finance, and technology.

Safaricom is reinforcing its own data protection and cybersecurity systems to safeguard its vast customer base. The company has invested in defending its network and has also significantly strengthened its privacy practices, earning the ISO 27701 certification. This international standard recognizes Safaricom’s responsible management of customer data and information security.
