Kenya Power launched its 2nd Grid and Innovation Conference 2025 in Nairobi, a forum aimed at fostering innovative solutions for the energy sector. The event, themed Accelerating Innovation for Business Sustainability brought together over 400 participants, including employees, industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers.

Kenya Power’s Managing Director and CEO, Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror, highlighted the company’s commitment to more than just providing electricity. “Our mandate goes beyond keeping the lights on. We aim to be the energy solutions provider of choice, delivering efficiency, reliability, and sustainability,” he stated. “Innovation is not an option but the foundation of our growth, resilience, and ability to serve a growing economy.”

The conference comes as Kenya works to achieve universal electricity access by 2030. This goal requires innovative ideas to ensure a reliable and adequate power supply, especially as customers adopt new technologies like e-cooking and electric mobility, which increase demand.

Echoing this sentiment, Kenya Power’s Chairman of the Board, Joy Brenda Masinde, praised the country’s leadership in renewable energy. “Innovation is a catalyst for revolutionizing access to affordable, clean, and reliable energy solutions. Kenya’s leadership in renewable energy integration, smart grid technologies, and e-mobility are a testament to the critical role of innovation in the energy sector,” she said.

To demonstrate its commitment to innovation, Kenya Power has launched an Innovation Ideas Portal. Hosted at the Institute of Energy Studies and Research (IESR), a fully-owned Kenya Power subsidiary, the portal will capture and track the growth of innovations targeting the energy sector.

Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary, Hon. Opiyo Wandayi, commended Kenya Power for the initiative, noting that the portal will provide “structured support to the innovators to match solutions to the challenges that we are facing in the energy sector.”

This year’s conference focused on a range of topics, including Emerging Issues, Knowledge Management, System Losses, Revenue Diversification, and navigating the digital landscape.
