Safaricom which is arguably the most profitable company in Kenya has today announced that it will be paying its shareholders a special dividend. This dividend will over and above the one which was for the year ended 31st March 2016. The dividend will be for Kshs 0.68 per share and will be paid to shareholders who hold the shares at the close of trading on 2nd September 2016.
Bob Collymore, CEO Safaricom, had this to say, There is room for this one-off special dividend of Ksh27.5bn due to the cash position of the company, and the significant retained earnings of Ksh82bn. This is an additional dividend to what we expect to recommend at next year’s AGM for the year ended 31st March 2017. The special interim dividend will be paid out on or prior to 1st December 2016.”
This is where individuals like myself feel like kicking themselves for not having bought the shares when they were trading at Kshs.2. For those who persevered and did not sell off their shares back then, they are reaping the benefits big time.
