In a price sensitive market like Kenya’s, smartphones that are affordable and come with decent specs are usually a hit. Phones like the Huawei Ideos, Samsung Galaxy Pocket and the Lumia 520 that were very well priced and with good specs, did very well in Kenya in terms of sales. You’ll note that the three phones that I have mentioned are entry level devices and this is because its that side of the market that the masses are really interested in.
Infinix has launched a contender in the entry level smartphone segment in order to try and gain a foothold in the market. They call it the Infinix Hot X507. The good people at Infinix offered me one to review and these are my thoughts on it.
Operating system
The Hot X507 comes with Android 4.4.2 KitKat. It also comes pre-installed with apps like Whatsapp, Facebook, Swiftkey and games like Assassin’s Creed and Danger Dash.
RAM, memory and processor
The phone comes with 1GB RAM, 16GB of memory and a 1.3GHz quad-core processor.
The device’s processor and RAM combine nicely to help the device run smoothly without a hitch even when multitasking. The 16GB memory is enough for apps, files and say music. For those who need more space, the memory is expandable upto 32GB via microSD.
Screen
The phone comes with a 5.0 inch (480 x 854 pixels) touchscreen.
The screen size and resolution is decent and is ideal for reading and gaming. The phone is well back lit and it helps that its visible even outdoors in the sun.
Camera
The phones comes with a 5 megapixels back camera (2592 x 1944-pixels) and a 2 megapixel front camera.
The back camera has a flash and takes very decent pictures. The front camera is also not half bad and the selfie generation will love it.
Battery
The phone comes with a 2000mAh Li-Ion battery.
The battery life on this phone is amazing. The battery can go a whole day with heavy use and upto 2 days with minimal use.
Build and design
The phone has a curvy design which fits very well in the hand. The phone is available in several colours and the back cover is replaceable.
Price and availability
The phone is available at Ksh. 6,999 on Jumia. However one has to pre-order the phone and then wait for 21 days.
Warranty and support
The phone comes with 1 year warranty. Support and service is available via Carlcare service centres.
Conclusion
The phone is quite good and at a very affordable price point. Availability however is an issue if one has to wait 21 days for it and Infinix should ensure that there are other channels for the phone’s to be bought. All in all it’s a great phone and I predict that it will do very well in this market.
