In 1974, Athi River Mining(ARM) was founded and started producing agricultural lime. In the years since its existence, the company has grown in leaps and now has more products to its name. It has diversified into industrial minerals, chemicals, rhino cement and Mavuno Fertilizer. In 2003, ARM set up Mavuno Fertilizer division which is responsible for the manufacture of a range of quality nutrient fertilizers.

Mavuno fertilizers are compound, crop and soil specific, scientifically blended, nutrition based fertilizers that contain eleven essential plant nutrients, that is, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, zinc, boron, copper, manganese and molybdenum. When all these are combined in specific blends, the fertilizer produced has resulted in superior crop yields besides improving soil fertility. It reduces soil acidity and improves nutrient uptake by plants.

There are three types of Mavuno fertilizer, namely;

Mavuno planting: It is a high blend of all the eleven nutrients specific for crops such as maize, wheat, barley, sugarcane, tea, coffee, tobacco, banana etc

Mavuno vegetables: It is a formulation specific to three vegetable groups, namely; Mavuno for leafy vegetables, Mavuno for peas, beans and root vegetables, and Mavuno for fruits and garden vegetables

Mavuno top dressing: It is an advanced formulation that contains nitrogen, calcium and sulphur that is used to top dress all crops.

ARM Mavuno has partnered with crop nuts; a soil testing laboratory. They offer farmers with regular soil testing, to help them know all about soil balance and get high yields in their farms. It is important for farmers to know what they are putting on their farms and ARM Mavuno is helping them know this. They are being taught the best way to get the best produce from their farms without having to spend too much time and money on it.

With Mavuno fertilizers farmers can benefit from reduced soil acidity and overall improved crop yield. Use of Mavuno fertilizers over a period of time has helped improve soil pH and thus farm productivity.

2014 has been a remarkable year for Mavuno Fertilizers as the Government of Kenya released the soil suitability report for maize in Kenya and recommended ‘Mavuno Fertilizers’ over twenty times in a report. After the release of the report they were contacted directly by county governments in Western Kenya.

This year they have provided maize planting and top dressing fertilizer for three counties in Western Kenya and they have experienced an increase in maize yields by 40%.

ARM Mavuno fertilizer is available in affordable packaging: 1kg; 10kg; 25kg; and 50kg. As things are, ARM Mavuno is definitely the fertilizer farmers need to increase production in their farms across the country.
