The Afro Fusion/Afro Soul community has gone through this dry spell surviving on the few albums dropped in the last 3 years. This year and next year may see a breath of fresh air. I was discussing with a friend in the music industry and according to him here are some of the Afro Fusion albums to look forward to. In fact, to be correct, here are some of the musicians whose albums you should watch out for:
Elani
This urban afrosoul band that is currently under Penya Africa has entertained Nairobian for years now and there fans now want to play their music after the show has ended.
Inka
With a name coined from the Kisii word, this Afrofusion group that blends folk tunes into their urban benga-like music has been working on their album for more than a year now. In fact, it is only the finalisation process that seems to take long. The hope of the fans is that it will be worth the wait. The band is working with Ketebul records, the home of Kenya’s best international acts like Winyo and Makadem.
Sauti Sol
They boy-band famed for their energetic performances and adoring female fans have just released a single to wet people’s appetites. When you get to buy the album make sure you turn the CD cover for a surprise on some of the producers.
Lele Ngoma
A young, promising band that has focussed on an eclectic mix of afrosou, having performed in events around Nairobi is heading to the studio this year finally and should have an album out by next year.
Dempsey
Vocalist extraordinaire, brilliant songwriter and performer, Dempsey hit the live music scene a year ago and has eye set on the Grammys. He is in the safe hands of producer MG under Penya. MG has previously worked with Kenya’s international star, Ayub Ogada and Suzanna Owiyo.
Prepare space and money in advance for these albums.
