Gearbox has partnered with the European Union (EU) to create the Gearbox Challenge. The GearBox Challenge is a 2 month scholarship programme for 26 candidates who will be able to bring their engineering ideas to life.

The programme will introduce students to key principles of engineering whilst giving them the space to explore their vision for the future of tech and innovation in Kenya.

As part of the partnership with EU, Gearbox will offer 2 month scholarship programme for 26 candidates who will be able to grow their engineering experience in the program.

Interested applicants should apply on the Gearbox Challenge website

This challenge aims to invest in young talent, to work together and ignite growth that will have an impact on our future generations.

Gearbox was founded by Kamau Gachigi, and it offers access to materials and equipment including 3D printing, laser cutting and electronic circuitry at a high-tech, 20,000-square-foot shared maker-space. It helps cut costs for inventors by providing access to assembly machines through a membership model.

As part of Gearbox, the Gearbox Academy focuses on imparting relevant hands on skills through Human Centered Design (HCD) and Industry 4.0 technologies, to promote digital literacy in engineering fields

The Academy trains students to identify challenges in society, then come up with effective and practical solutions. Students therefore apply HCD in ideation to make solutions meet the users need, then implement them by applying industry 4 technologies such as Embedded systems or Digital design and Fabrication

Courses offered in the Academy will include;

  1. Embedded Systems: Embedded Systems is a discipline that combines aspects of software and hardware computing i.e software embedded into computer hardware. This involves using micro-controllers and microprocessors such as AVR (Advanced Virtual RISC) controllers, ARM (Advanced RISC Machine) processors to build integrated solutions
  1. Digital Design and Fabrication: This is a course that takes you through the process of digital design on CAD software such as Inventor or Fusion, to fabrication on machines such as the Plasma cutter or CNC milling machines
  1. Workshop Technology: This course helps applicants to learn about workshop tools and processes. With this course, you can learn how to use power tools, hydraulic tools and other workshop processes such as welding, metal cutting and bending.
