Last night, I stumbled upon an Instagram post by a naturalista that complained about the lack of representation of all hair textures in the natural hair movement. She was especially disappointed about the low numbers of 4C natural hair bloggers.
The post went on to say that there is a hierarchy of natural hair, with those having the loose curl patterns of 3b, 3c and 4a being complimented for having ‘good’ hair. She further added that for a natural with 4C hair to be popular, she had to have long hair as if in compensation for not having a looser curl pattern.
I agreed with certain aspects of the post. It’s true, most tutorials on YouTube feature naturals with loose curl patterns and it can leave the rest of us kinky coily ladies out. However, there are also YouTube channels that have 4C hair naturals blogging about their hair. I agree, the number needs to increase but for now, we can rally behind the few who are blogging about 4C hair and have our own community.
The other aspect I agreed with is that there are very very few bloggers with short 4C hair. You have to go through multiple channels before you find one that has a hair type and length you can relate with. This certainly needs to change.
What I would also really like is for the natural hair products to be cheaper because, for goodness sake, they cost an arm and a leg!
