The music industry in Kenya has come a long way. However, the Lack of a proper distribution network plus lack of proper government support has hindered the development of the industry. Despite this the Kenyan music industry has continued to grow year on year and it is estimated that the revenues from the music industry will grow to Ksh. 2 billion in 2018 according to PWC (page 139).
Paul Nunda aka Jua Cali is a legend in the music industry. His entry into the music industry was in 2000 when he founded the record label Calif Records together with producer Clemo. Rapping in Sheng, Jua Cali pioneered the Genge style of music. He released his first song Ruka in 2001. He has since released three albums i.e. JuacaliSekta (October 2006), Ngeli ya Genge (December 2008) and TuGenge Yajayo (December 2013). He has won over 5 awards and been nominated in the MAMAs and the MTV Europe awards. Jua Cali has also landed endorsement deals with Motorola, Orange Kenya, Warners Brothers, Pilsner, Protex and Coca-Cola.
