In the past, if you happened to live far from the grid you had to make do with candles and kerosene lamps. Some of the kerosene lamps had negative side effects due to the fumes emitted as wick burned to emit light. Using these lamps to read or do homework proved to be strenuous for kids as they did not emit enough light. Not to mention the risk of fire accidents in the event the lamp fell.
However, with the advent of solar technology this is a thing of the past as the solar lamps provide enough light and do not produce any fumes. Yesterday, d.light a global solar launched the solar X850 a solar home system that will enable users to light their homes, charge their phones and also watch digital Tv.
The solar X850 is billed as being better than the competition in that it allows one to get more hours, it is more energy efficient and one is also able to control their power usage. The Tv included in the package recently won the Global LEAP award for “the world’s most efficient TV in its class. Another plus is that the Tv is digital meaning that you will not have to buy a DVBT2 decoder to watch the free channels.
d.light the company was founded in 2006 after Sam Goldman the co-founder witnessed firsthand the dangers of using kerosene lamps. This was in 2004 when he was a Peace Corps volunteer in Benin and a fifteen year old boy who was his neighbor got badly burned by a kerosene lamp. After the incident Sam enrolled in Stanford’s Entrepreneurial Design for Extreme Affordability class, where he met co-founder Ned Tozun. They founded d.light and their first commercial solar product made a debut in the marketplace in 2008.
The solar system will retail for Ksh. 49,300 and one can be able to pay via installments.
