KRA waives penalties and interest following iTax system downtime

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced a full waiver of penalties and interest incurred by taxpayers due to recent technical disruptions on the iTax portal. The intermittent downtime severely inconvenienced taxpayers by disrupting normal operations, leaving many unable to log in, complete return filings, or process payments on time.

In a public notice issued by the Commissioner General, the tax collector acknowledged the frustration caused by these system failures and confirmed that relief will be granted pursuant to Section 89(5A) of the Tax Procedures Act. The waiver specifically covers penalties and interest accrued during verified periods when iTax services were either completely unavailable or intermittently inaccessible.

To address the inconvenience directly, KRA is currently updating its back-end system processes to automatically identify the downtime periods and waive any corresponding charges accrued by affected users.

Expressing regret over the operational hiccups, the Authority extended its appreciation to the public for their patience and cooperation, reiterating its commitment to restoring system stability and supporting tax compliance through reliable digital infrastructure.
