Nairobi is preparing for a massive dose of Japanese and global pop culture this weekend as Otamatsuri 2026, Kenya’s premier anime, manga, and multi-entertainment convention, lands at The Carnivore Grounds.
Organized by Movie Jabber, the day-long spectacle features headline acts KATANAYA ICHI, a visiting Japanese samurai and ninja performance troupe bringing traditional warrior theater and movement straight from Japan to a Nairobi stage.
Beyond the mainstage performances, the event offers an immersive experience for enthusiasts of anime, gaming, cosplay, K-pop, and tech. Thousands of fans are expected to fill the venue in full cosplay, competing in gaming tournaments, browsing food and merchandise stalls, and participating in interactive panels. For hardcore gamers, the main event will transition into an all-night LAN party stretching into Sunday morning.
Speaking on the event’s evolution, Jotham Micah, Managing Director of Movie Jabber, highlighted the shifting landscape of African pop culture:
“Otamatsuri is about bringing the worlds that people have traditionally experienced through screens into a real-life shared experience. Having a professional Japanese samurai and ninja troupe perform live in Nairobi is a major part of that. Anime, gaming, K-pop, and Japanese pop culture are no longer niche interests; they are becoming an important part of how young people express themselves, connect, and discover new cultures.”
The convention’s rapid expansion highlights the rising economic power of Kenya’s fandom economy. Vendor sales at Otamatsuri surpassed Ksh. 4.6 million in 2025, with the 2026 edition set to draw more than 5,000 attendees.
By blending traditional Japanese performance art with modern global pop culture, Otamatsuri 2026 serves as a vibrant crossroads where African youth culture and global fandom intersect.
