Safaricom-sponsored golfer Samuel Chege solidified his command of the Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK) Equator Tour, capturing victory at the sixth leg hosted at the Nakuru Golf Club.
The Thika Sports Club professional posted a formidable four-round score of 12-under-par 280 to top a competitive 49-man field, securing his second title in the tour’s second edition. Chege, who previously claimed victory on his home turf during the tour’s second leg, further entrenched his position atop the Order of Merit standings, where he now leads with 3,852 points.
Chege held off a late charge from veteran professional Dismas Indiza, who secured second place with a score of 6-under-par 286. Mutahi Kibugu rounded out the top three at 5-under-par 287, delivering two podium finishes for Safaricom-backed golfers.
“It feels great to win here in Nakuru. The last time we played here, I finished second and was very close to winning. Coming back this year and finishing first makes this victory even more special,” Chege said following his win. “I came here determined to win, and I am really happy to see the hard work I have put into my game paying off.”
Chege’s performance highlights the ongoing influence of corporate sponsorship in regional golf. Safaricom’s continued backing provides Kenyan professionals a structured platform to refine their game, build competitive consistency, and pursue international qualification pathways.
The tour now shifts its focus to the Sigona Golf Club for the seventh leg. Players will compete for crucial Order of Merit points, which serve as a gateway for qualification to the Magical Kenya Open and long-term positioning for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
