From eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo to Sierra Leone, even when war is at its worst, breweries continue to operate. And South Sudan’s biggest brewery is not being left behind.

SABMiller, the South African- and United Kingdom-based brewery, has decided to keep the beers coming despite the crisis in South Sudan having majority of the country’s expatriates on the run. But it won’t be easy.

When violence broke out at the end of last year, 53 SABMiller expatriates were evacuated to South Africa, the UK and Uganda and the brewery is now operating at only half its capacity.

Sales had been halted in the worst-affected towns such as Bor, according to its spokesperson, Nigel Fairbrass.

The brewery remains the only manufacturer in the country’s fledgling capital Juba. As some would say, when a country’s brewery shuts down that’s when you really need to start worrying.
